Cape May By Chip Cheek

Hello!

Today I'll be reviewing Cape May By Chip Cheek published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. A HUGE THANK YOU to the publisher for kindly sending me a proof copy.

I'm really nervous to write this review, I have been pondering for quite a while whether to review this book or not. I know a lot of people do not agree with negative reviews but I think that as an honest book blogger, it would be wrong of me not to express my genuine opinions on this book.

Here's the Synopsis:

Late September 1957. Henry and Effie, very young newlyweds from Georgia, arrive in Cape May, New Jersey, for their honeymoon only to find the town is deserted. Feeling shy of each other and isolated, they decide to cut the trip short. But before they leave, they meet a glamorous set of people who sweep them up into their drama. Clara, a beautiful socialite who feels her youth slipping away; Max, a wealthy playboy and Clara’s lover; and Alma, Max’s aloof and mysterious half-sister, to whom Henry is irresistibly drawn.

The empty beach town becomes their playground, and as they sneak into abandoned summer homes, go sailing, walk naked under the stars, make love, and drink a great deal of gin, Henry and Effie slip from innocence into betrayal, with irrevocable consequences.

My Thoughts

Okay, so first off the cover is GORGEOUS and attractive. This is what drew me in initially. I had really high hopes when I picked up this book as I had seen it everywhere over on Book Twitter and Instagram but turns out it just wasn't for me...

Here's a short summary of this book:

Disclaimer: This book is surprisingly graphic.

The book starts with Henry and Effie, newlyweds going to Cape May for their honeymoon. The town is pretty much deserted. A few days after their arrival in Cape May, they aren't enjoying their honeymoon anymore, they're bored and Effie wants to return home. One night, they decide to gatecrash a party and coincidentally it happens to be the party of an old friend of Effie's named Clara. Shortly after, Henry and Effie find themselves caught up in what feels like a new, fun and exciting world. Soon after, Henry basically starts cheating on Effie with Alma. Effie then finds out. I literally have no idea what happened towards the end when Henry cheated on Effie with Clara and Effie cheated on Henry with Max. Everything then just falls apart. Fast-forward a few years, the last chapter (totally unnecessary) is all about how Henry and Effie had children but their marriage was never the same again...

Unfortunately, I didn't like the characters nor the plot. Wait, does this book even have a plot?

To be honest, this book does not have a storyline, I felt like I was reading a Wattpad story gone wrong. The whole book was just filled with excessive drinking, parties, cheating and graphic scenes. Towards the end, it was totally UNBEARABLE.

My Rating:  2/5 STARS ★★
